All Apps:Episodes 1-10

Here are the apps we reviewed in the first ten shows of Apps and Hats. This post was started to coincide with the launch of Episode 22, the New Years Show, these are the apps we looked at in 2009…

I have a *few* favorites. If you picked any of these up after watching a show or have a few faves yourself we’d love to hear from you!

ONE

iTie (Now vTie)

This was one of the first apps we reviewed. If you didn’t see it or you just can’t get that tie looking fabulous then this is the app you need.

vTie Lite / FREE

vTie Premium $1.99

Presentor

This app chosen by Christine because it gave us the ability to save our websites into one app, like an area to bookmark so you can show clients websites without having to go through your phone… But it has disappeared off the face of the App Store, so we don’t currently know if it will be back.

Currently unavailable in the App Store.

TWO

Tap Tap Revenge 2

This app has gotten stronger and stronger, now on version 2.6.3 with push notification ~ I mean how hi-tech can you get! There are so many different versions of this game now and there will be something to suit your style.

Tap Tap Revenge 2 $0.99

Robo Logic

I loved this game then and I love it now. It’s just such a nice concept, you program the robot to do basic (and not so basic) routines. It’s a nice entry for kids into the ideals of programming, yes I know it’s just a game but some of the ideas about what a subroutine is and why you use it really gets them to think about why they will place a certain command where. It got me thinking and it still makes me smile to see that little robot. If you missed it first time round, you should try the Lite version which is now available.

THREE

iTranslate

Well Hattie mentioned in her review the on thing that would really make this one sing for her- that it would also have a voice feature. At the time she may have been joking, thinking this was not going to ever happen, but WOWZZA they have done it! These improvements mean this app is still a great one to get.

iTranslate $1.99

Organizer

I wasn’t convinced at the time about this app, it was a bit difficult to use and awkward in its interface. Also it had a hideous icon which is a reason for me to not want it on my phone. But in the months that follow they have continued to improve the app and the icon is so much better. It’s an expensive app and I still think there may be others that do the job better but worth a look at if you need an organizer style app.

Organizer $5.99

FOUR

Facebook

We looked at Facebook only a few shows in because it was an important app for many, and since then it has had a lot of updates and changes, not only to the app but the site/service too. Currently on version 3.1.1 Seems to be an essential app for most.

Facebook FREE

Twitterfon (Now Echofon)

This has been my favorite Twitter app for most of the year. It has gone through a lot of changes, from it’s name, to it’s logo to the features they offer. They may have started as a smaller, basic app but are now one of the big players. They have list support and push notifications, and they were one of the firsts to do it. Now on version 3.0

Echofon FREE

Echofon Pro $4.99

Twitteriffic

This application had a total over haul and started other Twitter app designers thinking about their own UIs and how things could be done differently. For me it was something different when I first tried this app – it was that fab little bird noise when you got Tweets. That really set this app apart and made it really unique. Now we are in many different revisions and many different features later and most apps have sounds but it is worth having a look at if you want to try something with a different look to it. Version 2.1.1

Twitteriffic Premium $4.99

special mention~ Flight Control

This game started a whole trend of amazing games and many games are now referred to as ‘in the style of Flight Control’. Great game, which has been updated to include many more runways and different airplanes.

Flight Control $0.99

FIVE

LCube Lite

Hattie showed us that solving the Rubiks Cube was possible! The app has a lot of different choices for different types of cubes or patterns.

LCube Lite / FREE

LCube $0.99

TouchPoet

When I first tried this app I thought it was a really unique idea and used the iPhone in a unique way. I still think that and now that they have a Lite version, if you didn’t get this fun app the first time round, you should give it a try now. The basic idea is that you can write little stories / poems using a variety of sources from Kipling to Digg, great combination of Old School and current. You can tweet out your creations too! There that got your attention~

Touch Poet Lite / FREE

Touch Poet $2.99

SIX

special mention~ Shazam

Now into version 2.1.0, this is an almost essential app that a large number of iPhone owners have. It was great when we first looked at it and it’s even better now.

They have recently added to the app so there are now 2 premium versions, offering different features, the Encore version and Red which is a brilliant idea > this special edition app is trying to help fight the battle against AIDS in Africa. 20% of the price is contributed to HIV and AIDS programes in Africa.  It’s one of those apps that lives on my home screen and I use it every week.

Shazam FREE

Shazam Encore $4.99

Shazam Red $4.99

Ocarina

Although this app has pretty much remained the same since it’s launch, I was so excited when it came out because it was showing that people were thinking of other new and exciting ways to use the iPhone. This is basically a musical instrument and you blow into your speakers to ‘play’ it. Pretty fun! They have made a new app called I Am T Pain which is the current number 1 music app, so these guys are on to some winner apps!

Ocarina $0.99

SEVEN

Catcha Mouse

Hattie loved this simple fun game and with it being a freebie she thought it would be worth a try. This little game did prove to be popular and in October they released Catcha Mouse 3.

Catcha Mouse FREE

Catcha Mouse 2 $0.99

Wild West Pinball

I still think this is one of the best pinball games out there. It is responsive, quick loading, easy to get into and the graphics are really well done. The device seems to be perfect for this style of game. Currently version 2.1 has adapted a snowy theme which is fun. They have added a save and restore feature which is great. Also new is the ability to have fixed or live camera mode, where it follows the ball around.

They have since made other style of pinball games, The Deep is ocean themed and recently a Jungle theme.

Wild West Pinball $0.99

EIGHT

Epicurious

This free app Hattie found is full or recipes and shopping lists so you could buy all the ingredients you needed to make some great food. Only version 1.1 but it updates content from the website. Worth a look at for that price!

Epicurious FREE

iShoes

50,000+ shoes on your iPhone- need I explain more! This was a great find in the lifestyle category because I was struggling to find something that was worth a look at. The category seems to have improved but this app remains a great choice for looking at / favouriting / finding out when the sales are / buying shoes! (yes they have an iBags app too)

iShoes FREE

Lotto@UK

This app gets you all the lottery draw information. It’s a free app and if you find yourself logging on the the internet to see what the numbers are then you will find this app useful.

Lotto@UK FREE

NINE

Amateur Surgeon Lite

This crazy game was chosen by the sweet Hattie, apparently it’s also T Pains fave app and you can try it for free if you don’t already have it.

Interesting concept, like the childhood operation game, only, erm, way more blood, bones, strange tools…

Amateur Surgeon Lite / FREE

Amateur Surgeon $2.99

WC Ping Pong (now called World Cup Table Tennis)

I’m not a very good player but the fun with this game comes from the multiplayer mode. playing against someone else makes this a real treat. Losing against them is less fun. The ability to play against an opponent is a feature of the full price version.

World Cup Table Tennis FREE

World Cup Table Tennis $0.99 Sale price

Harbor Master

This game when it came out was fabulous and it keeps getting better. They have continued to add levels and interesting additions such as a cannon to shoot at pirate ships that attack you. Playing against someone else who has the app and a device is fantastic fun. Watching their stress levels and panic as you both try to unload that cargo. Great game, one of my all time favorites ever. Now version 1.6

Harbor Master Lite / FREE

Harbor Master $0.99

Edge

Information to follow.

Not currently in the App Store

Evernote

This productivity app is on my homescreen and it’s worth it’s place. It connects to the Evernote service and from your iPhone you can record voice memos / photos… it is a clean simple interface and this is a great service and polished app that is always worth a mention. Already on version 3.2.1

Evernote FREE

TEN

special mention~ Mover (Now Mover Lite)

When I first tried this app we knew it had to be on the show. It’s a simple quick way to connect 4 devices, iPhones or iPod touches and just “throw” across contact information, images and in this new version, video files. The 3.0.3 version says it has been re-built from the ground up and flicking these items across should be faster and no need for pairing devices. Practical and fun! Mover + has now also been released.

Mover Lite / FREE

Mover + $1.99

Email ‘n Walk

This was the first of it’s kind and there have since been a few copycats surfacing. None have made anything as good as what this app is, and I still think it is a great little innovative app. All it does is lets you write emails and using the camera on your iPhone you can see where you are walking. Really fun to show people! When I reviewed this app I asked for a Tweet n walk app as that is something that I would use a lot, and that has also been released! (see later in the reviews)

Email n Walk $0.99

We would love to hear your thoughts about any of these apps featured. Do you own them, do you have any favorites, or do you have any information about the apps gone missing!
